As a newcomer to cruising, you probably have a lot of questions and some uncertainty. There may even be some fears. It is in the hopes of this package to answer some of those questions, quell some of those fears, and get you ready to set sail!
How safe is cruising? I’ve seen “Titanic” and “The Poseidon Adventure”.
Cruising is extremely safe. For starters all ships are required to have a minimum of 110% of maximum capacity for lifeboats. Example: If a cruise ship maximum capacity is 3,000 people, the lifeboats are required to have a minimum capacity of 3,300 people. There is also a sufficient supply of inflatable life rafts which supplement the lifeboats. Prior to departure on the first day, there is a mandatory assembly (or “muster”) drill for all guests and crew which demonstrates what the alarms sound like, where your assigned evacuation station is located, and what to do in the unlikely event of an emergency. In addition, there is a security force on all ships and hundreds of surveillance cameras.
What if I get seasick?
It is suggested that you purchase Dramamine tablets prior to sailing onboard. You can purchase them from any drugstore. If you do not have any handy, you can obtain them from ship stores onboard, or from medical personnel.

What is a SetSail Pass and what is a SeaPass? (Royal Caribbean Only)
A SetSail pass is issued by your travel agent (us) once you have completed the payment process. It is your primary boarding document which will give you access to the ship’s port. This document, along with your passport, indicates that you are ready to board the vessel. A SeaPass, is your official ship’s card. This card serves as your ship’s identification, room key, boarding card for the different ports, and is your onboard debit card (more on this below). Your SeaPass is an extremely important card and must be protected and on your person at all times. If your card is lost, you must report it to your group leader and to the ship’s front desk immediately.
What is included in the amount that I’ve paid for the cruise?
The price of the cruise generally includes most meals and beverages, most entertainment, and passage. It does not include alcohol, shopping, some specialty restaurants onboard, gambling, and some entertainment.
How do I pay for purchases onboard?
Most ships are cashless (except for the casino). At check-in at the Port, you will specify how you would like to pay for all of your onboard charges. You have the option of using a credit card or cash. If using cash, there is a minimum of $300 ($500 is the cruise if 5+ nights) which is to be paid up front. As you purchase items on the ship, your ship ID card will be swiped and you will be asked to sign a receipt. The total amount will be automatically charged to your account. On the last night of the cruise, you will receive a final statement of all charges. Please review it for accuracy. If there are no discrepancies and you have used a credit card, do nothing and your card will be charged on disembarkation morning. If you used cash to set up your account and have a credit, proceed to the front desk to receive the difference, or if you owe you must pay the balance prior to leaving the ship. You will not be allowed off the ship on disembarkation day if you owe a balance.
What should I pack?
Each individual is different, however we recommend beach attire, casual attire (i.e. polo shirts and khakis for men, pants and blouses for women) and if possible, formal attire. There should be no more than 1 suitcase and 1 carry-on bag for 3-4 day cruises, and 2 suitcases/1 carry on bag for 5+ day cruises. We will advise how many formal nights there are and suggest clothing options for your particular cruise.
Will my cell phone work onboard?
Possibly. Please check with your cellular provider. Be advised that you will be charged international roaming charges if you use your cell phone. The ships have internet cafes where (for a small fee) you can send e-mail and surf the web.
What are some of the activities to do onboard a cruise ship? Will I be bored?
Absolutely not! Cruise ships are floating cities with lots of activities. The ship has a dedicated cruise director who, along with his/her staff, plan events, answer questions, and ensure that the passengers are having the time of their lives. Some of the activities to do onboard include:
·Gambling in the casino
·Parties under the stars
·Themed game shows
·Pool contests
·Broadway shows
·And lots more!
Not all activities are available on all cruise ships, however. You will receive in your cabin on a daily basis a general schedule of all activities on and off of the ship. This will help you plan your day accordingly.
